A White Hummingbird?

October 13, 2008

Cindy Voorhees in Davisville reported a strange little visitor recently.

The pictured hummingbird, which is mostly white, visited her feeder at her home on Highway 4 for several days.

She said the bird is all white, except for darker areas on his wings, tail and head. She said he was shy compared to her other birds.

Submitted photos.

I have a lot of those around my house. I didn’t think anything of it til one flew by my ear, they are loud. Can they be pets? IDK what to feed them if they were. Could they live in a house? We have flowers inside and outside of our house so…

You can contact Fred Bassett at Fhound@aol.com or 334-244-0227 if the bird returns or if you have a ruby throated hummer that stays beyond 15 Nov. He wants to know whenever you have a non-ruby throat. Mr. Bassett bands hummers as part of the ongoing Humming Bird Study GroupeHBSG efforts to understand hummer migrations . Keep at least one feeder up year round as there are many hummers which don’t migrate from the east to south america or decide to come east from the west instead of going straight south. Hope you have lots of bird traffic this fall/winter and do call/email Fred if you have a bird

It seems that there are a few more of the white hummingbirds around. More information can be found at:

The Hummingbirds were definitely unusual around here this year. We had one at our feeders that we all called Sitter. He would park himself on the feeder and sit for twenty minutes at the time. The other hummers would buzz him to have their turn to eat, and Sitter would just continue to sit. We figured out he was admiring himself in the window behind the feeder! Hopefully they are on their way to Mexico now, but we look forward to seeing them next year. I can’t wait to see if Sitter returns to our feeders.

Thanks for putting my bird on your website. I took the advice of Deni Deron and sent a picture to Birds and Blooms magazine.

This bird just showed up one day, stayed about 5 days and was gone. While he was here he fed exlcusively at this feeder and would not let another bird near it. After doing some research, I discovered it was (most likly) a pie-bald ruby throat.

We are in Middle TN. A white hummer was at our feeder a month or so ago. We took a picture but were not close enough for it to show up. Would be interesting to know if he traveled that far.

That is awesome!! I hope you plan on passing that picture on to Birds and Blooms magazine. They have a website. I’m sure they would love to have it in the magazine. :)
