OK…I’ve closed the comments on this article. I think we’ve had enough discussion about a snake, and a few folks stepping over the bounds on rule #1 — “Be Nice”.

Thanks for reading NorthEscambia.com, and thanks for your comments.

I guess since you are writing in all caps that means you are yelling. Why would I give you my full name? So you can “hunt” me down! It has nothing to do with being a coward. It’s just none of your business. We all have a right to our opinion. And since it was your GROWN son that killed the snake, why do you feel the need to fight a battle that doesn’t exist? Nobod is making a personal attack on your family. Your actions and words speak for themselves!

..COME ON “ann” GIVE US YOUR FULL NAME…GOD DID GIVE US A BRAIN, BUT YOU OBVIOUSLY MISSED OUT!!! ACTUALLY SOMEONE DID ENJOY THIS MEAT AND SOMEONE ELSE WILL HAVE A BEAUTIFUL SNAKE SKIN ….PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ANOTHER PERSONAL ATTACK ON “THE DORTCH” FAMILY….IT’S A DONE DEAL..GET OVER IT!!

I love everybody, nomatter what they kill.

  5. Kevin Bethea on September 19th, 2008 7:14 pm

I have noticed that the people who are criticizing Adam for killing this extremely dangerous snake, will only give their first name, or just initials. If you are going to attack someone, atleast let them know who you are. I am not getting in to the religous debate that this has turned into, but I can assure you “ann” that the Dortches are not angry people, Adam has been a friend of mine since grade school. He nor his family, in any way deserves the comments that have been made here. But, if it was your family under attack, you would defend them as well. Or at least I hope you would!

Ann .. you are right, in that there are MANY “rules” in the Bible that I have not obeyed. As far as the dietary rules in the Old Testament go, they were given to, and intended for Israel alone. The purpose for those “rules” were to show Israel, and indeed the Gentiles, that NONE of us could keep them, and that we are utterly lost. Keeping the Law cannot “save” us, it can do nothing but condemn us.

Galatians 3:24 “Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.”

If you believe what God tells us, that we are truly lost and without able to remedy this condition for ourselves, there is a solution. A free gift from God. All we have to do is believe (have faith) that Jesus (the Christ) died for our sins (paid the price that God demands for sin), that He was buried (He was truly dead), and that He rose from the grave to new life (thus proving that God accepted the payment in full), then you are saved. It is that simple. That is THE Gospel.

    Faith + NOTHING

I hope you will take this to heart, though it’s got nothing to do with the debate of killing a dangerous animal, it is the most important thing for any human to consider.

    God bless

There are GOOD snakes and there are BAD snakes and I know the difference. I do not kill good snakes. If that big honker crossed my path…I would probably not have killed it because I would’ve died of a heart attack first! Had I not parished first…you dang right I would’ve killed it!!!!

AB…you’re not following rule #1 and I quote “(1) Be Nice. No comments that slander another, no racism, no sexism, no personal attacks.” With an emphasis on “BE NICE”

  8. ann on September 19th, 2008 8:02 am

Get over it already! Obviously the snake wasn’t trying to attack anyone. It was killed because of sport. Would it kill someone? Yes, to defend itself or out of fear. Snakes do not hunt humans; they simply have a kill or be killed instinct. Just like all predatory animals. Should we go on a hunting spree to rid our area of all dangerous creatures. Probably not. That would mean most of your pets would be in danger (big dogs). Yes, it is ignorant to kill an animal if it is not trying to harm you. As for the genesis quoter, there are a lot of rules in the old testament that I am sure YOU follow. Especially when you are biting into that big old ham sandwich or chowing down on that rib (read the rules on pork). Yes, God did put us in charge of animals. He also gave us a brain and I am sure He expects us to use it wisely. Kill the snake if it is endangering you. Don’t if it’s not. Simple. Boy, the Dortch’s sure are angry people. Says a lot for their family!

I only have one thing to say, ignorance is BLISS!

  10. Heather on September 18th, 2008 6:31 pm

“AB and R” the two of you don’t have enough courage put your names on here but you do have enough courage to call my brother ignorant for killing a deadly snake, it seems that maybe the two of you might be the ignorant ones.

Of the 21 responses you are the only two that seem to think that this was wrong???

  11. Mandi on September 18th, 2008 3:28 pm

It’s not ignorance if you are in fear for your life and the lives of your family.Way to go Adam!

  12. r on September 18th, 2008 7:22 am

Yee haw yourself! Just another bunch giving the south a bad name! No wonder the north end gets laughed at! That snake was beautiful. AB is right!

  14. Heather on September 17th, 2008 7:57 pm

So… “AB”, the next time you or your child are in your yard or anywhere for that fact, and a six foot two inch rattlesnake comes up, what are you going to do?
Say, “Oh rattlesnake you’ve lived this long and are so big, you need to just leave”. NO!! you’re gonna kill him just like Adam did. That rattlesnake is right where he belongs…..on someone’s feet, around their waist and around their cowboy hat!!
    YEE HAW

  15. Kevin Bethea on September 17th, 2008 7:55 pm

Who is this “ab” and where is he or she from? I guess that they have never had a loved one bitten by a snake. I bet ab has a lot of enemies around here. Next time Adam maybe we should just catch the snake, and let ab pet it. See Ya

P.S. you tell em! Ms Pat

I found an Eastern Diamond back that had been run over today in Molino on Jahaza St. It was about 4½ to 5′ long and fat. It had a half digested a squirrel. Too close for comfort. My father killed a 42″ Timber Rattler 3 weeks ago in Southern, Al.

And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life
    Genesis 3:14

  18. ab on September 16th, 2008 5:26 pm

Like I said, pure ignorance around here!

  19. PAT DORTCH on September 16th, 2008 3:39 pm

HEY AB…NEXT TIME WE’LL JUST DELIVER IT TO YOUR DOORSTEP OR YARD …OK?

  20. PR on September 16th, 2008 9:25 am

    AB
Humans drive cars and sane people do not shoot humans. Snakes, last time I checked are not human. As for the rats, that what exterminators are for. You go ahead and pat that big ole snake on the head when you see him. He isn’t going to get a chance to bite me or my loved ones if I see him first. You must be from the North.

  21. S.L.B on September 16th, 2008 8:26 am

Gee Wiz….gives me the willies just looking at it!

I say…if you don’t want rats on your property, then GET A CAT! The way I see it, the statement about a deadly snake -vs- a car and shooting innocent victims sounds a little out there. You walk up on one of those, you are automatically the enemy and that deadly snake will not cut you any slack and strike you dead in a New York minute. Around here where we live, we have to protect our animals, our loved ones and ourselves first!

  22. ab on September 15th, 2008 6:40 pm

PR, right you are. However, my child could just as easily , Lord forbid, get hit by a car. That doesn’t mean I should shoot innocent drivers. Snakes don’t hunt humans. It was probably just trying to cross the road. I suppose you like rats and other rodents infesting your house and property. What do you think snakes eat!?

  23. PR on September 15th, 2008 9:05 am

AB, Hope you or anyone you care about doesn’t happen up on a snake that big. Might change your tune. Think about what it could of done to a small child playing outside. Better safe than sorry.

  24. Steph on September 13th, 2008 2:31 pm

    Way to go Adam!

  25. Tracey on September 13th, 2008 9:58 am

    Whoa!

  26. ab on September 13th, 2008 9:47 am

A snake that had survived long enough to be that large deserved to live. People around here are so ignorant!

  27. Becky on September 11th, 2008 8:42 pm

The best kind a dead one!!!!!!!!!

  28. williams family on September 11th, 2008 7:15 pm

  30. Kenny Shivers on September 11th, 2008 2:42 pm

Everyone please be very cautious, the rattlers are crawling everywhere this time of year – My dad killed one, 5 1/2 foot long on their carport just last Saturday. Alerted by their feist, Molly, he went outside to find the rattlesnake crawling out from under their car!

  31. Chris on September 11th, 2008 7:19 am

Thats lets see… humm??? A new belt, belt buckle, boots, watch band, ring to go around cowboy hat, and just maybe a new vest for the tux.
