Sunday Was World Rabies Day

September 28, 2008

Sunday was World Rabies Day, and the Escambia County Health Department has prevention tips for you.

Many wild animals such as raccoons, foxes, bats, and skunks can carry the rabies virus. It is important this time of year to take precautions to prevent rabies to protect yourself, your family and your pets, according to the health department.

The Escambia County Health Department offers the following tips:

  • Make sure your pets get and stay vaccinated
  • Don’t allow your pets to run free
  • Make sure your garbage is securely covered
  • Don’t feed pets outside
  • Enjoy wild animals from a distance
  • Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals
  • Show children how to stand still like a tree, “BE a TREE”, if they are approached by wild or stray animals

People still get rabies. I thought they had a shot for it or something.
