The letter “B” was for “Benny’s Bar-B-Q” Wednesday at Carver/Century K-8 School as the faculty and staff were honored for their part in improving the school’s state grade.

The Century Chamber of Commerce provided the lunch for the entire staff at Carver/Century to thank them for their hard work in taking the school from an “F” school to a “B” rated school in just one year.

“Principal Jeff Garthwaite, teachers and staff of Carver Century K-8 Elementary School in recognition of their hard work and dedication to bring our school from and “F” to a “B” in just one year. ‘Thank you’ from the entire community of Century,” a certificate presented to Carver/Century Principal Jeff Garthwaite said.

The faculty and staff enjoyed barbecue pork sandwiches, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw and cake, all served up by a smiling and grateful Benny Barnes, president of the Century Chamber of Commerce. Sporting a red “Benny’s Bar-B-Q” apron, he piled barbecue high on each sandwich while offering up words of praise to each faculty member for their part in the school’s improvement.

Several community leaders were also on hand for the event sponsored by the Century Chamber of Commerce. Two local businesses also helped out with the event…Whataburger in Century donated buns, and Century’s Piggly Wiggly provided the cake.

Yes, “kids first”… the kids did take the test… However, if you know about Carver/Century, then you surely know that the Teachers and Administration, the Custodians, the Lunchroom Workers, the Instructional Aides, the Parents, and the Community put the “kids first” each and every day. The students were the ones with the pencils in their hands during test time, yes… Without the things they have been taught from Pre-K until now, though, they would not have made the grades they made. The standardized tests are not created to assess uneducated children. They are created to assess educated children as well as the teachers who have educated them. Each and every day parents and teachers/administrators/etc. do so much more for children than you can even imagine!
As for the “YOU FEED THE FACULTY AND STAFF BUT CANT FEED THE KIDS? PIZZA PARTY,CARNIVAL ANYTHING COULD HAVE BEEN DONE FOR ALL SAYING GREAT JOB” comment… I happen to know several of the teachers personally, and am a grandparent myself. Not only did my grandchildren tell me that they (THE CHILDREN) were given cake for their hard work on that day, but so did several teachers! If you were to step into almost any classroom at CC, you would see that the teachers are rewarding their children DAILY for the good work they do! If you would like for your child to have a pizza party or something of the sort, maybe you should offer to bring the pizza? I’m sure the school would not oppose! I have done that several times, and not once have I heard a complaint.
Maybe you are not aware of the fact that most of the children at CC receive free lunch every single day. Not ALL of the children, I am sure… but the majority of them. Unfortunately, SOME of those children get their best meal of the day in the FREE meal provided. Sad, but true.
Each and every PERSON at Carver/Century played a part in bringing the score up. Since when was it a crime to reward our teachers for a job well done? The students, administration, custodians, aides, lunchroom workers, etc. deserve recognition as well, do not misunderstand me… However, when I was growing up, teachers were appreciated. I make a point each and every year to make sure my grandchildren show their teachers just how much they are appreciated. It may be that they show their appreciation by respecting their teacher and receiving respect in return, and not by throwing them a pizza party… But there is still appreciation shown on both sides of the coin! Maybe we should be more worried about the education our children receive, rather than the food the school provides them with.

I have done more than you will ever see. I see it first hand everyday When I step into the schools doors. When they close down are carver/century schools next year go bye and pickup the stones, that all the none guilty threw out but still complain about everyone else.there is alot of people fighting to keep hope and spirits high in children today and teens,go to your local churchs/schools and see the struggles of keeping kids intrested in anything.if you don’t show appreciation and attention to kids someone or something else in the world will.and all we can talk about is stones”wow”

YES WE APPLAUD ALL THAT WHERE INVOLVED IN THIS GREAT PROGRESS TO BECOME A “B” SCHOOL. BUT THAT STILL DOESNT ANSWER THE QUESTION AT HAND ,WHAT ABOUT THE KIDS THEY DESERVE MORE THAN JUST A PAT ON THE BACK AND YOU GOT A GOOD EDUCATION THIS YEAR. YOU FEED THE FACULTY AND STAFF BUT CANT FEED THE KIDS? PIZZA PARTY,CARNIVAL ANYTHING COULD HAVE BEEN DONE FOR ALL SAYING GREAT JOB, AT THE SAME TIME.YES IM PROUD MY KIDS GOT A BETTER EDUCATION THIS YEAR BUT IT WAS A COMBINATION OF ALL NOT JUST ONE.REMEBER THE REMARK THERES NO “I ” IN THE WORD TEAM. I BET THE KIDS DIDNT FEEL GOOD WATCHING THE TEACHERS EAT THAT GREAT LOOKING “B”Q .
IS THIS THE SAME STAFF THAT WAS TEACHING THESE KIDS LAST YEAR AND THE YEARS BEFORE! WHY COULDNT THIS HAVE BEEN DONE SOONER? IF IT HAD WE MIGHT NOT BE LOSING ARE GREAT SCHOOL AND ALL THE CHILDREN TO OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE AREA.WHAT ABOUT ALL THE CHILDREN BEFORE THAT GOT PUSHED ON TO HIGH SCHOOL THAT DIDNT GET THIS “B” CHANCE,NOW ALOT OF THESE CHILDREN ARE STRUGGLING TO MAKE IT IN HIGH SCHOOL.I DO BLAME ALOT OF THIS ON THE LACK OF SUPPORT FROM THE ESC.COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD YOU LOOK AT WHAT ARE SCHOOLS HAVE IN THE NORTH END OF THE COUNTY VERSES THE PENSACOLA SCHOOLS ITS A BIG DIFFERENCE.THE BEST WAY TO SAY THIS IS GREAT JOB TO ALL,THANK YOU- GOD FOR BLESSING THE TEACHERS,STAFF AND MOST OF ALL THE KIDS . GREAT JOB!!!!!!

I applaud the teachers and administration at Carver/Century Elementary School. They did the nearly impossible by turning this failed school into a winning institution. and to respond to the comment “what have they done for the kids”, I say ALOT! I know for sure that new teachers and committed administration led to this impressive jump. Accountability of students and parents play the most important role in making a good school great. And when you think about how far they came in one school year, it just has to make you think, “thank GOD that there are still teachers out there that really care”. I would like to specially commend Miss Gill, who taught kindergarten last year, where she transformed low level expectations into accountability of students and parents that led to her class leading in dibels scores and pride in their ability to read before entering first grade! I can say that Miss Gill’s students excelled academically and mentally, gaining self-esteem abundant along the way. I give high kudos to the faculty that DID try to lift this school from the gutter and WON!
