Gindl Out; Harrell To Face Slayton In November For School Board

August 27, 2008

gindl.jpgAfter 24 years on the Escambia County School Board, Pete Gindl, Sr. will not be returning to that office. Gindl finished third in the District 5 School Board race Tuesday, behind Bill Slayton and Tom Harrell.  Slayton and Harrell will face each other on the November ballot.

Slayton received 3,682 votes (35.2%), Harrell 3,225 (30.8%), Gindl 2,486 (23.8%) and Robert Tegenkamp 1,063 (10.2%). Because neither candidate received 50 percent or more of the vote, Slayton and Harrell will be back on the ballot November 4.

“We are pleased with the results,” Slayton told NorthEscambia.com Tuesday night. “We expect a larger turnout in November. It will be a totally different race.”

“I want to serve the people,” Harrell said Tuesday night. “Naturally, I would like to have won tonight, but I’m happy to be in the runoff.”

Both Slayton and Harrell took the time to applaud Gindl for his years of service to the Escambia County School District, both an a board member and as long time educator.

“What a great job he did as a school board member,” Slayton said of Gindl and his legacy. “He was great to me in the seventies as a teacher, and great to me as a band director at Tate High School. But the voters have decided that it is time to move on to new leadership.”

“I commend him for his many years of service,” Harrell said. “I just called him and left him a message thanking him for what he has done. He has had a remarkable level of service.”

“I got defeated,” Gindl told NorthEscambia.com late Tuesday night. “I hope the one that wins is able to do the job that needs to be done on the school board for the children. It’s about the children.”

Just to clarify, Mr. Slayton was NOT demoted. He was transferred to another school at the request of Jim Paul. Please get your facts straight before you post a comment.

I will be supporting Bill Slayton.

I know Mr.Harrell will support the entire north end of the county. He answers his phone, and he will fix the problems in the North end. Mr. Harrell works extremely hard and is he is the most qualified candidate by far for this election. I pray that Mr. Harrell will be elected in November, so that our children will get a school board member that will support them and get them what they
    deserve.

well after so many years of little or no representation from Mr.Gindl for the true north end of the district, maybe now we can put someone in this office who realizes that the north end does not stop at Molino .I am tired of the way we get what ever leftovers the school board wants to throw at us.We deserve more than the crumbs off the table.I think the whole board should be booted out of office, especially since none of them knew the amount of our money that was going to pay for utility bills for a church being run in a school facility.Sharpen the pencil and find more cuts???Maybe new glasses would have helped. All the money the district is suppose to save by closing Century/Carver needs to go to the schools that will become overcrowded by the closing,to the bus drivers who will work longer hours transporting those students, and to the teachers who will have more students in their classes…..The board of education was never intended to be a for profit entity..just be self supporting.A school board ran by volunteers who are parents might not be a bad idea.At least mostof them know how to cut corners and budget.

Mr. Gindl is a good man and has done many good things in his years of service.
I am supporting Tom Harrell on the November 4 election day. Mr. Harrell has promised to take care of the concerns of the North end of the county and he is the best man for the job. Mr. Harrell has been a administrator for 19 years and a teacher for 17, and unlike Slayton he has never been demoted in any way. Mr. Harrell will solve the problems of Atmore students going to school in Escambia county quickly and fairly. Mr. Harrell puts children first in all decisions. His experiences and knowledge in administration makes him the best man for the job. Last year he turned sims elementary from a F school to a C school. WE SUPPORT YOU MR.HARRELL AND ANTICIPATE HAVING YOU AS OUR NEXT
    SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER!!! GO HARRELL!

I would like to commend Mr. Gindl as well. I am sure he will continue in a different capacity to help the Northend schools. His family is a blessing to our children. I, just as Ms. Brown would like to see some type of solution to the problem of Atmore children being allowed to flock to our schools. I do not know what the solution is, but hopefully our new representative can bring some positive change to that. I am all for every child receiving a good education, but our schools are losing tax dollars to pay for the out of state children. I will be paying close attention to both canidates and their views on this issue.

I just wanted to thank Mr. Gindl for all he has done for me and the rest of the northend. We are going to miss you!

I am very happy with these results. Mr. Slayton promised to crack down on Atmore students going to school here illegally. I pray he goes into office and this problem will be solved. Good luck, Mr. Slayton! You will continue to have our family’s support!
