Deputies, Helicopter Chase Horse Across Century

January 20, 2008

horsehunt.jpg

Escambia County deputies chased a horse across Century Sunday night, finally cornering the “suspect” at the back of Showalter Park.

Deputies first received a call about 7:00 of a horse on the loose near Century Woods Apartments on Highway 4. The horse then made its way across Highway 29 and through neighborhoods around Showalter Park and Carver Century School.

The sheriff’s department helicopter was called to the area to assist in tracking the horse because it posed a threat to traffic, especially as it crossed North Century Boulevard (Highway 29).

The helicopter was forced to leave the scene for fuel after tracking the horse in the cemetery behind the ballfields at Showalter Park.

Nearby residents Ericka Nelson and her husband arrived at the scene with food and a halter, quickly catching the horse about 8:30. A horse trailer was brought to the scene about 9:00.

Nelson, a second grade teacher at Bratt Elementary School, has horses on her property in Century. The name of the owner of the horse was not immediately available, but it did not belong to Nelson.

Carver Century Holds Vocabulary Word Parade

January 19, 2008

img_2928.jpg

The students at Carver Century Elementary School paraded as some of their favorite vocabulary words Friday, all in continued preparation for the FCAT and school improvement.

The Pre-K to grade 8 school was a Florida grade “F” school last year, but the teachers and staff have set out under the leadership of Principal Jeff Garthwaite to change that this year.

Part of their plan is to make learning fun, and that’s exactly what they did Friday with their vocabulary word parade. Children and teachers alike dressed as, or otherwise represented some of their top vocabulary words.

“A pig is an animal that says ‘oink, oink’,” said one Pre-K student. “Corn is a vegetable that grows on a farm,” said another. “A rooster is a chicken that says ‘cock-a-doodle-dooooo’,” another said.

The vocabulary words continued with Mr. Reeves dressed as a “zookeeper, that takes care of wild and tame animals”. There were special appearances by “purple”, “yellow” and “red”.

One little fellow named William had the word money. “My name is William, give me the money!” he said to the delight of the other students.

Compound words were popular. Birthday, basketball, dragonfly, popcorn, cupcake, football, handbag, hairbrush, grasshopper and ladybug were among the favorite compound words.

One person, perhaps a teacher or staff member, was “incognito” and remained unidentified (pictured above).

Principal Garthwaite’s word? “Motivate”…the entire reason for Friday’s vocabulary parade at Carver Century.

the road to the crown Part Five

January 19, 2008

Today, it’s part five of our five part series “the road to the crown”. All week, we have been following 25 young ladies at Northview High School in their quest for the crown and the title of “Miss Northview High School” for 2008.

The pageant was Saturday night. For complete pageant coverage, including photos and the winner’s list, click here.

A few years ago, there were only eight girls in the pageant. Tonight, there are 25 and the requirements are tougher. A good GPA; no major referrals, suspensions or in-school suspensions; and no fines owed to the school are all required.

The pageant is sponsored by the Northview High School Cheerleaders as a fund raiser. Pageant coordinator Anna Barry is the cheerleader sponsor. She has spent countless hours preparing for the pageant, coaching the girls to be their best.

We’ve posted more photos today from several different rehearsals. Some are in black and white so we can show them to you without spoiling the excitement of seeing the gowns in their colorful splendor Saturday night. Plus we thought the black and white was just cool looking. See the latest photo gallery by clicking here.

Join us here at NorthEscambia.com Sunday morning to find out who the new Miss Northview High School is, and for a complete photo gallery from Saturday night’s pageant.

Tonight there will be a top ten and then five finalist from which a winner will be named. After watching the girls for several practices, we think they are all winners. Even though they have all been in competition for the crown, they have been friends. We did not see or hear anything mean spirited. Just a group of girls acting like a good family should, supporting each other on “the road to the crown”.
